Once upon a time

Once upon a time there lived a King and the Queen. The King and Queen were very happy in their small but accommodating palace. The King and Queen resided with a dog, known as the Princess, and a cat, known as His Highness.

His Highness was an unusual cat. He was old (over 21 years), but he loved life. He was a very loud cat – he loved to meow as loud as his vocal chords would let him. All of his needs were taken care of. If he wanted to go outside, he went outside (albeit on a leash). If he wanted catnip, his royal servants would give him catnip. He was fed the priciest food. He had a heating pad just for himself. His Highness especially loved baiting the Princess into barking. His Highness was one of a kind.

One day His Highness wasn’t feeling well. The King called the Queen and said, “My dear, His Highness has stopped eating.” With heavy hearts, the King and Queen knew what had to be done. The Queen made sure that His Highness’s last hours on earth were happy – outside, in the warm sun.

His Highness received a royal funeral, after which the King proclaimed, “There will be no more cats until the start of the new year.” Needless to say, the King was very lonely, and two kittens were adopted the following week – two brothers, His Royal Highness Crazy Eyes and His Royal Highness The Cat of Siam. And life began anew in the kingdom.

  1. Such a sweet, sweet story. Cats are funny like that. They don’t have families, they have staff!

A few weeks after we had to have our tea cup poodle put to sleep, a beautiful chocolate point Siamese followed my son home from school. He missed Arnie so much we let him keep her. Imagine our surprise when she turned out to be pregnant! She had six kittens: Shredder, Bruno, Grey Guy, Tiger, Stripey (who was a beautiful tortoise shell calico), Weedsy Woo, and in a second pregnancy, Daisy. We got them all neutered and spayed and got their shots. We advertised them in the paper for free. We could not get rid of even one.

Fortunately for us we lived next to a field (which has now been filled with houses) so we kept them all. Eventually as they passed away from one thing or another, the three females ended up in the house. One by one we lost them. In 2007 we led the last one, Daisy, up to that Rainbow Bridge. She was 19. We said no more pets for awhile.

Then my son and his wife moved in (she was from Florida and had to leave her cat behind) and one night this black kitten showed up on our doorstep. Mariel fell in love with it immediately. This time it went right to the vet. Our son and his wife are separated right now, but here it is going on eight years later, and guess who has the cat! Her name is Miss Twitchington. We just call her Twitch.

I’m a sucker for cats. But I miss having a dog. Bran and Mariel have a little Chihuahua named Jose Cuervo. Didn’t think we’d EVER get used to him. We ended up falling in love with him. We miss him so much. Sigh…
